The Mechanical Engineering Department in a Railway is responsible for:

supervision and maintenance of all Coaches, Freight stock and Diesel locomotives.

Functioning of workshops dealing with maintenance of Rolling stock & related items, Diesel sheds,

Repairs and maintenance of Diesel locomotives, Coaching depots,

Operation & maintenance & upkeep of Goods rolling stock, ART’s, ARME’s, Heavy diesel hydraulic

cranes, in-motion weigh bridges and diesel fueling points installations.

Formulation of Works Programmes and M&P programmes, Monitoring of progress of ongoing works,

Modernization of Workshops, Depots and Diesel sheds.

Mechanical maintenance facilities related with New & Expansion projects.

Drawing section of Mechanical department. Dealing with Rolling Stock programme and RDSO matters,

Computerization and Automation.

Day to day performance of equipment failures.

Condemnation and scrap yards.

Planning of Mechanical works, Preparation and sanction of detailed estimates and expenditure, etc.
